Relief
for Storm Victims in Bangladesh
Cyclone Sidr swept in from the Bay of Bengal and
roared across the southwestern coast of low-lying Bangladesh late
Thursday, Nov. 15, with driving rain, 150-mph
winds and a storm surge of up to 15 feet deep, leveling thousands of flimsy huts
and destroying crops and fish farms in 15 coastal districts. The government of
Bangladesh, a poor, desperately crowded nation of 150 million people, declared
the cyclone a 10, the highest on their hazard scale. Homes of more than 43,000
people were either lost or badly damaged. More than 2,000 people killed. Winds
uprooted trees, sent billboards flying through the air, and destroyed fishing
boats. The damage to livelihood, housing and crops from Sidr is "extremely
severe," said John Holmes, the U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian
affairs. CRF will be sending aid through a church in Alabama that has done missionary
work in Bangladesh for years.
100%
of funds sent for Bangladesh Relief will be used for meeting
needs of storm victims
