Ethiopia Deaf School

Right: Bereket is 12 years old and attends 4th grade. His teacher comments that "He is a very brilliant student. His class performance is excellent. He studies very hard."

"I hope your work is going well. I have spoken to some folks recently from Amarillo. They spoke very highly of you and the work you are doing. Thanks for your help.
All the students sponsored through CRF are still in school and seem to be doing well. There certainly isn't a shortage of students. We are overwhelmed with applications from many more children than we can possibly accommodate. For some reason there seems to be an increasing number of deaf children in Ethiopia. In our Beginner A and B classes the last two years we have not accepted any "hearing" children until we are sure we have room for all the deaf that have applied. We want to have a few hearing children in every class in order to maintain our integrated system of teaching.
This system has helped eliminate the "handicap" image the deaf have of themselves. They understand they can compete in every area of life with children who can hear.
One by-product of this integrated system is that the hearing students who have gone through our schools and have gone on to graduate from government high schools and are entering the job market are coming back to us looking for a teaching job. At this time we have four of them in the government teacher training school and within a year they will be teaching in our upper grades. These are young people who grew up with the deaf and speak sign language as good as the deaf do. In a year or two, perhaps our teacher shortage will be answered.
