"Eating roots, grass, and bugs is better than starving!"
"The BBC recently said that Malawi and Zimbabwe were the most seriously
affected by drought conditions among all the African nations. It looks like
Namikango is now at the very center of those problems. Several million people
are hurting but we cannot feed them all, so we will concentrate on helping those
with the greatest need," say missionaries in Malawi.
"We do not like being involved in hunger conditions, because it causes
much of our teaching work to be postponed, but are thankful that we are in a
place where we can help the most. We are glad to have the Mark Thiesen family
in place. They are the answer to very fervent prayers as they have stepped forward
to replace the Wilkses.
"The Mission staff has proposed that whatever hunger funds we have available
would be used for helping those who are least able to help themselves,
such as the orphans and older widows and the lame. They have
proposed that we give a cash gift, where the people can buy corn at the local
market. Corn is now available for those who have the money to buy it. They recommend
that we give the equivalent of $5.00 cash to each qualifying family.
"In order to get the names of those who need help the most, we are asking
the leaders of each village, men whom we already know and trust, to give us
a list of names of the most destitute families among them, whether Christian
or not.
"Next, they want to send our staff members to all the villages throughout
the region, where they can personally and discreetly see that the funds
are properly distributed. There has always been a danger of having
funds mishandled and we want to see that this is not done. It will be a tremendous
task!
"We have already received some 2000 small sacks of mixed grain from the
Church of Christ group at the Mercy Hospital in Northern Malawi. They asked
that this only be given to hungry children and we are in the process of doing
that. We are most grateful for this help, though it reaches only a tiny part
of those who are suffering from hunger, and the conditions will only worsen
over the next few months." Sidney Vaughn
