Day-to-day life has been a challenge for Shalyne and her family. Her father is deaf. He is stigmatized in their community, so finding work is usually impossible for him. Shalyne's mother works odd jobs wherever she can find them, but she rarely earns even $1 per day to provide for all of the family's basic needs. Shalyne's academic performance has been affected by her family's situation of poverty, as she has been in and out of school due to lack of fees.
